The Book of Wondrous Possibilities by Deborah Abela

Adventure knocks on Arlo's door with the arrival of Lisette, delivering the Book of Wondrous Possibilities. Within this book is a story written by Arlo’s mother just before she died in a tragic accident. Arlo’s Uncle Avery recognizes the book at once as a grimoire, a legendary type of rare book with magical properties, and says “with this book, when a story is read by the person it was written for, it comes true”.

Adventures are all very well, but what really draws me into this world is the beautifully crafted characters. The best stories have truly good characters to fall in love with and in contrast, shockingly evil scoundrels. The good characters, however, are not flawless. They display a range of emotions such as Arlo’s anger at his mother's senseless death, to regret that he hadn't been more welcoming to Lisette when she arrived. And, throughout all these challenges runs a wonderful sense of humour.

Arlo thought of himself as someone who craved safety and security. With Lisette’s arrival he learns that his mother had written a story about him in the magic book that would reveal to him his own heroic nature.

I think if you enjoyed A Series of Unfortunate Events this book would be just the right read for you.
