The community is invited to join Wyndham City’s acknowledgment of National Sorry Day on 26 May and to help reflect and acknowledge Reconciliation Week, from 27 May to 3 June.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Jennie Barrera, encouraged the community to participate in these important days of significance.

“Let’s come together to recognise National Sorry Day which is a day of reflection and learning that commemorates the Stolen Generations,” she said.

“We’ll gather for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony that’s been provided by the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation - we’ll also have a flag raising event, performances and a range of guest speakers.”

“Additionally, we’ll be hosting stalls that offer information on a range of community services, resources and cultural activities for the whole family.”

“The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, ‘Now More Than Ever’, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue.”

“National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.”

A flag raising, smoking ceremony and cultural activities will also be held on 27 May for National Reconciliation Week, while other activities will also be held over the course of the week and will be listed on Council’s website: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/national-reconciliation-week
