Wyndham City is proposing to improve local amenity and road safety in the Wattle Avenue Precinct, Werribee with a range of traffic measures and invites community feedback on these ideas.
Traffic flows on local residential streets in the area have increased considerably since the State Government’s rail level crossing removal works. These works included the construction of the Tarneit Road extension, that connects into the Princes Highway near Wattle Avenue.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Jennie Barrera said it was important to effectively manage traffic flows on arterial and local roads around Wyndham to meet the needs of our growing city.
“The Tarneit Road extension is a rail overpass that replaced the Cherry Street Rail Level Crossing, this was an important addition to our road network to improve safety,” she said.
“It unfortunately made the Wattle Avenue precinct an attractive alternative to Duncans Road, which is an arterial road that is meant to carry higher volumes of traffic.”
“We need to strike the right balance in keeping traffic to our main roads as much as possible while protecting the amenity of our local residential streets and improve access and road safety for all users,” she said.
“We appreciate residents’ concerns about increased traffic in and around the Wattle Avenue, Tower Road, Edwards Road and the Sailsbury Street area.”
“Through a State funded study, we collected data to inform a range of proposed traffic measures that are expected to slow traffic and shift drivers back to the surrounding main roads.”
“This proposal builds on previous community engagement that saw Council lowering the speed limit in the area to 40 km/h, banning trucks, and introducing other measures like speed humps.”
“The study and community feedback shows these measures have had a positive impact but more work is needed to address the traffic concerns.”
“We now want to share the study’s insight and ideas, and seek community feedback.”
“Any local road proposals arising from the consultation would then be considered for funding and roll-out in line with Council’s usual budgetary processes, noting that smaller scale treatments may be implemented more quickly through existing operational budgets. ”
