Volunteers (mates or mentors) are matched with a person living with a mental illness who is socially isolated, with the aim of supporting the person to achieve their recovery goal of participating in their local community and/or developing a specific skill. An important part of having and maintaining good mental health lies in feeling included within society.

For people living with a mental illness, social inclusion and reducing stigma play a central role in their recovery.
