Wyndham City is developing a new Heritage Network Strategy to help recognise and celebrate heritage places in Truganina and Tarneit.

The Truganina Heritage Network Strategy went live today on The Loop (theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/truganina-heritage-network-strategy) and this is a chance for the local community to share their thoughts, stories and memories of Truganina and Tarneit.

Truganina and Tarneit hold a rich history spanning tens of thousands of years, shaped by the enduring presence and traditions of the Bunurong peoples. The area’s cultural landscapes and environmental histories remain significant to both First Peoples and the broader community.

Since the mid-19th century, the area has seen agricultural settlement and community growth, evolving into what is now known as the suburbs of Truganina and Tarneit. The area includes a network of diverse heritage sites including buildings, ruins, dry stone walls, archaeological sites, and environmentally important locations. These places not only reflect the area's agricultural past but also contribute to its cultural landscape.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, said that as Wyndham continues to grow, there's a need to manage development while preserving these important heritage assets.

“By creating the Truganina Heritage Network Strategy, we can make sure these sites continue to define our community's identity and character for generations to come,” Cr Shaw said.

“The Strategy will focus on the Skeleton Creek and Dry Creek corridors, and Doherty’s Road, stretching towards Woods Road in the east. While there aren’t strict boundaries, the area generally covers Truganina and parts of eastern Tarneit.”

Bemin Ward Councillor Preet Singh added: “We want the community of Wyndham to help us shape the strategy and let us know how Truganina and Tarneit’s heritage should be celebrated, and what elements of its history should be better highlighted.”

“If you have any memories or stories associated with the area and want to share what is important to you about its history, please take the time to visit The Loop today.”
