The Centre for Multicultural Youth are seeking professional volunteers with at least three years of work experience to support newly arrived refugee young people with job readiness skills through mentorship.

Volunteers support their mentees to:

  • Identify and focus on their strengths and interests
  • Leverage these strengths and interests to set goals for their career
  • Gain clarity about their needs, goals, and future pathways pertaining to employment
  • Increase their understanding of the steps needed to enter the workforce in Australia, including:
  • Identifying relevant job opportunities
  • Preparing CVs, cover letters and KSC documents
  • Performing well in interviews
  • Navigating workplace culture
  • Build confidence, feel supported and feel more prepared for work

Mentors and mentees continue to work together if the mentees secure employment. That’s because, along with supporting young people to overcome the barriers they face entering the workforce, Employment Empowers is committed to creating opportunities for young people to succeed and stay in the workforce.

The role is flexible, and the mentor and mentee are free to meet at a time and location that is suitable for both parties. Wherever possible, we encourage mentors to meet close to the location of the young person's neighbourhood, as many of the young people in the program do not have a driver's license or access to a car.

To become a volunteer, applicants will need to complete a formal interview and provide referee contact details, complete various child safety clearances and attend CMY training online and engage in self paced training. This can take up to 12 hours.

Commitment to the program is for up to 12 months, meeting your mentee once or twice a month for approximately 1 hour.
