David Lee Pereira is a practicing visual artist whose paintings and large-scale public installations delve into the fluidity of gender, sexuality, and identity, exploring these through the recurring themes of dysphoria and interpersonal relationships. Influenced by the work of impressionist and surrealist artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Dali and Bosch, Pereira’s floral expressions range from beautifully brutal, to joyous and intimate, and are overflowing with symbolism and narrative.
Does it have to be so... ‘Queer?’ is a mural installed at the eastern side of the Station Place laneway. The fusion of international flowers and local flora and fauna is inclusive of the diverse and culturally rich background of the people of Wyndham, both paying respect to the traditional owners of the land and welcoming new community. The suggestive nature of the flowers is visually subtle, but provides references to and representation of sexuality, gender and LGBTQIA+ discourse.
