Penrose Promenade Community Centre Mural

On the exterior walls of Penrose Promenade Community Centre in Tarneit are murals titled Threads of Belonging and Whispers of the Land, by local artist Camila Paz.

Camila ran creative workshops with children, parents, and community members at the centre, where she gained an understanding of the space and the people who use it. The murals feature children and adults from diverse communities in the Tarneit area, celebrating its vibrancy and fostering a sense of connection.

The artist says:

‘Threads of Belonging (facing Turva Avenue) and Whispers of the Land (facing Penrose Promenade) are inspired by people who live in the area, representing a celebration of their stories and heritage. They are also a call for unity, respect, and equality—a reminder that we all belong to a greater whole.’

With a bold and minimal artistic approach, some figures are culturally identifiable, while others are open to viewers’ interpretation. The mural shows a connected community, energised by a vibrant colour palette.

Camila Paz is a local artist who migrated from Chile to Australia. This is Camila’s first mural project of this scale. With the support of council’s project partner MAMAM, an experienced mural production team, it has been an opportunity for the artist to expand her practice and develop new skills.

This mural was delivered as part of the Wyndham City Public Art Plan 2022-2032.
