Werribee Library temporary closure FAQs
What is happening?
Werribee Library will temporarily close to the public from 2 September until early 2025 while critical works are underway on the Wyndham Cultural Centre upgrade, which includes works within the library.
Why will the library be closed for such an extended period?
There were always going to be planned closures of Werribee Library as part of the Wyndham Cultural Centre upgrade.
However, once work on the upgrade began in July, it was clear that dust, noise and other disruptions from the construction site had a bigger impact on Werribee Library operations than first anticipated. Additionally, it was discovered that the electricity and other services for the library and Wyndham Cultural Centre are inextricably linked, which has already resulted in power and internet outages for the library since works began.
As a result, Werribee Library will be closed for longer than originally anticipated for the safety of the public and library staff, and to allow the Cultural Centre upgrade to occur smoothly and efficiently, without frequent disruptions to Werribee Library operations, staff and users.
Can I still use the returns chute at Werribee Library?
The returns chute at Werribee Library will also remain open during this time for the convenience of regular library users.
Where is the next closest library?
Hoppers Crossing Library at Pacific Werribee is the next closest library. A free library shuttle bus is now in operation between Werribee Library and Hoppers Crossing Library to make it easier for patrons to access a branch while Werribee Library is temporarily closed.
The shuttle, which will operate Monday to Saturday, will run as follows:
The Werribee Library pick-up point is located at 84 Synnot Street, Werribee (the bus stop outside Salvation Army) and will leave at the following times: 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
The Hoppers Crossing Library pick-up point is located at the bus stop next to Supercheap Auto at Pacific Werribee and will leave at the following times: 10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
The returns chute at Werribee Library will also remain open during this time for the convenience of regular library users.
All other libraries remain open, or you can access a huge range of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, movies, TV shows and other online resources for free through Wyndham’s eLibrary: https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/services/libraries/elibrary/wyndhams-elibrary
Can I take my pram/wheelchair/mobility scooter on the shuttle bus?
The 24-seater bus allows has capacity for foldable prams and wheelchairs, but not mobility scooters as it is not a full-size bus.
When will Werribee Library re-open?
Werribee Library will re-open to the public in early 2025, once the critical works have been completed. The re-opening dates will be communicated to the public well in advance.
What does the Wyndham Cultural Centre upgrade involve?
The upgrade will:
- Relocate and revamp the gallery spaces
- Provide a new collection space for the visual art collection
- Modernise and refreshing the bar, foyer, and amenities
- Provide direct entry into Werribee Library from Wedge Street
These works will better meet the needs of audiences, artists and the community users of the Wyndham Cultural Centre.
